एक ईमानदार लकड़हारा था अपने परिवार के साथ गांव के पीछे की ओर जंगल के किनारे रहता था रोजाना वह लकड़ियां काटकर उसे बेचकर उससे मिलने वाले पैसे से अपना भरण-पोषण करता था उसकी जिंदगी एकदम से खुशहाल बीत रही थी अपने बच्चों को और अपनी पत्नी को और खुद के लिए तीन वक्त की रोटी का जुगाड़ कर लेता था एक दिन लकड़ियां काटते काटते वह जंगल के भीतर तक चला गया. लकड़ियां ना मिलने के कारण वह भीतर जंगल में ही सुखी सूखी लकड़ियां ढूंढने लगा तभी उसे एक सूखी डाली दिखी उसे देखते ही वह अपनी कुल्हाड़ी लिए पेड़ पर चढ़कर उसे तोड़ने लगा.

यह तोड़ते समय उसके हाथ की लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी छूट जाती है और वह पास की नदी में जा गिरती है कुल्हाड़ी गिरने के बाद वह बहुत परेशान होने लगता है, कुल्हाड़ी गिरने के बाद वह रोने लगता है नदी में जाकर ढूंढने भी लगता है परंतु उसको कुल्हाड़ी नहीं मिलती है यह सब देखकर गरीब लकड़हारा और भी परेशान हो जाता है और उसे वह वही किनारे पर बैठकर भगवान से प्रार्थना करने लगता है कि वह मुझे अपनी कुल्हाड़ी को लौटा दो, थोड़े समय बाद उसे रोता देख नदी में से एक परी बाहर आती है.

परी नदी में से बाहर आने पर उस लकड़ हारे का हाल पूछती है. परी पूछटी है कि तुम रो क्यों रहे हो बताओ क्या हुआ. मैं तुम्हारे सभी पर परेशानी दूर कर दूंगी ऐसा सुनकर लकड़हारा कहता है कि मेरी कुल्हाड़ी वह एक नदी में लकड़ी तोड़ते समय नदी में गिर पड़ी है मैंने उसे ढूंढा है परंतु वह मिला नहीं. लगता है वह नदी के बीच गई है जो मुझे मिल नहीं रही अगर आप मेरी मदद करना चाहते हो तो आप मेरी कुल्हाड़ी मुझे लाकर दे दो वह देवी नदी के अंदर जाती है और उसे एक कुल्हाड़ी ला देती है उस कुल्हाड़ी को  बड़ा खुश होता है.

पर वह थोड़ी देर बाद कुल्हाड़ी को देख कर उदास हो जाता है, और रोने लगता है. वह देवी कहती है तुम क्यों रो रहे हो? मैंने तो आपकी कुल्हाड़ी वापस लाकर दे दी है तुम दोबारा क्यों रोने लगे वह कहने लगता है. देवी! यह कुल्हाड़ी मेरी नहीं है मेरी कुल्हाड़ी दूसरी थी ऐसी मेरी खिलाड़ी नहीं है यह तो सोने की कुल्हाड़ी है मेरी कुल्हाड़ी लोहे की थी मुझे लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी चाहिए. वह देवी उसकी वही कुल्हाड़ी लाने के लिए नदी में दोबारा जाती है और इस बार दूसरी कुल्हाड़ी लाकर उसे दोबारा देती है इससे ज्यादा खुश होता है. इस बार वह चांदी की कुल्हाड़ी होती है.
