एक दरबार में एक अकबर और बीरबल रहते थे बीरबल बहुत ही चतुर था एक बार राज्य में बहुत तेज ठंड लग रही थी तब राजा ने ऐलान किया कि जो इस तालाब में जो भी रात भर खड़ा रहेगा उसे 100 सोने के मुहरे इनाम में मिलेंगे। यह चुनौती बहुत ही मुश्किल थी जिसे कोई भी नहीं कर रहा था.

कुछ समय के बाद एक गरीब आदमी इसे करना चाहा, उसे अपनी बेटी की शादी के लिए पैसों की जरूरत थी इसलिए वह इस चुनौती को करने के तैयार हो गया. वह रात भर तालाब में खड़ा रहा, ठंड काफी ज्यादा था, गर्मी को महसूस करने के लिए पास के महल के ऊपर लगे सबसे ऊपर वाली मशाल को देखने लगा.

रात के समय में उस आदमी की निगरानी के लिए सैनिकों को खड़ा कर दिया गया.
वहां पर खड़ा एक सैनिक उस पानी में खड़े आदमी को देखता रहा कि वह क्या कर रहा है. सुआबाह होते ही राजा वहां देखने आते है और सैनिकों से पूछते है, सब कुछ सही सलामत से हो गया, अब इस व्यक्ति को इनाम देना चाहिए. एक सैनिक राजा को बताता है कि रात में तालाब में यह खड़ा तो था परंतु उसे मसाल की गर्मी मिल रही थी.

राजा ने उस आदमी से पूछा- तुम कैसे रात भर तालाब में खड़े हो पाए तब आदमी कहता है मैं जलती हुई मशाल को देख रहा था तब यह सब सुनकर राजा अकबर ने उसे इनाम नहीं दिया। राजा ने कहा शर्त के अनुसार तुम्हे इनाम नहीं दिया जायेगा.
वह आदमी बहुत ही हतास हुआ, रोने लगा, पर कोई सुनवाई नहीं हुयी.

वह आदमी दौड़ा दौड़ा बीरबल के पास गया और ये साडी घटना बीरबल को बताया. बीरबल कहा मुझे 1 हफ्ते का समय दो उसके अंदर मैं तुम्हें इनाम दिलवा दूंगा अगले दिन बीरबल दरबार में नहीं आया.

तब अकबर ने एक सैनिक को बीरबल के पास भेजा। बीरबल सैनिकों से कहता है कि मैं दरबार के लोगों के लिए खिचड़ी बना रहा हूं, अभी नहीं आऊंगा। तब सैनिक वहां चला गया उसके दूसरे दिन भी बीरबल नहीं आया अब अकबर ने फिर से सैनिक को भेजा, बीरबल ने सैनिक वही पहले वाला जवाब दिया, इस तरह से दूसरे दिन भी बीरबल नहीं गया.

राजा अकबर ने बीरबल से कहा की ऐसे तो खिचड़ी कभी भी नहीं बन पाएगी और बताया की जब रक् आंच उस बर्तन तक नहीं पहुँचता तब तक खिचड़ी तो क्या बर्तन भी गरम नहीं होगा. तब बीरबल ने कहा हाँ महाराज आप ने सही बताया, मैं तो यह बात जनता हूँ ये आपको समझाना था, जैसे पिछले रात जब आदमी पानी में खड़ा था और मसाल उससे बहुत दूर तो उसे मसाल की गर्मी कैसे मिलेगी.

यह सुनकर महाराज बीरबल को देख मुस्कुराने लगे और फिर अगले दिन राजा अकबर ने उसे बुलाया और आदमी को इनाम दिया.
